Dmitry Maximov: “The number of people wanting a FIAS coaching certificate is steadily increasing”

FIAS will hold an international seminar for Sambo coaches in December. As the FIAS website has already reported, coaches with special training and experience in Sambo are invited to attend. In an interview for the FIAS website, Dmitry Maximov, Sports Director of the International SAMBO Federation, talked about the purpose and objectives of the seminar, the opportunities it offers for coaches, and still another opportunity for advanced coach training.

– What is FIAS doing now to provide professional development and advanced training for coaches?

– The work we’re doing is mainly related to organizing and holding seminars for athletes and coaches. Many other countries have carried out similar training with positive results. But it’s also become obvious that these activities are not enough to ensure that national federations have the required number of coaches.

As a result, we’ve prepared a document governing questions of upgrading skills and awarding international coaching levels. These “Regulations on the Assessment Procedure for Awarding Sambo Rankings” were adopted at a meeting of the FIAS Executive Committee in September 2014.

– Have there been a lot of applicants for a FIAS coaching certificate as a result?

– This document gives official permission to teach Sambo, so the number of people wanting a FIAS coaching certificate is steadily increasing. That’s why we decided to hold an international coaching seminar in December 2015. I’d like to note that the first International Seminar for coaches will be held according to the Regulations on the Assessment Procedure for Awarding Sambo Rankings and the Seminar Regulations. Everyone interested in taking this training course must fill out an Application Form. To participate in the seminar, coaches must provide a letter of recommendation from the National Sambo Federation – a member or a candidate member of FIAS.

– The seminar format is suitable for the most professional coaches. Will there be an opportunity for specialists to take more advanced training?

– Yes, we’ve also provided that opportunity. FIAS is starting to gather information on people who want to take advanced training in Sambo as part of a professional development program at the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism in Moscow. A special feature of this course is that a group of 10-15 people based on language (English, French, etc.) is formed for 14 days of theoretical and practical training under the university program. The university’s best instructors will give lectures and seminars.

There will be an exam at the end of the course, and students who pass it successfully will receive a state-recognized certificate. Secondary or post-secondary education (not necessarily in teaching) is mandatory for inclusion in the group. The course (14 days) costs 675 USD, and accommodation on the University campus costs 15 USD a day.

The International Sambo Federation has already started setting up a group for special Sambo training (14-day program) at the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism (State Central Order of Lenin Institute of Physical Education - SCOLIPE). Everyone interested in taking this training course must fill out an Application Form.
